Welcome to Lefty's Last Cry!

A letter from the an editor:

Well folks, it's the start of a new school year (for those of us who are still in school) and a new year for Lefty's Last Cry.

Lefty's Last Cry is Notre Dame's progressive headquarters. Founded in 2008, Lefty's is dedicated to progressive political causes, the free exchange of ideas, and, of course, Notre Dame. Our writers each have their own style and write about whatever they feel like writing about, but we tend to try our best to add our own personal insight and more of a local flavor to the news of the day. We cover national, international, and even local Indiana news and politics from a liberal perspective, but we keep comments unmoderated to give a voice to all points of view. We also coordinate with various student groups, especially with the College Democrats to promote different events.

Lefty's Last Cry was a blog founded by Henry early in the summer of 2008. What started as a personal blog for Henry to vent his ideas about politics turned into a huge project. Henry had to call it quits later in the summer when he started his internship in Washington DC, but later, Henry invited me to join up with him and write on here in the fall semester of 2008, and gradually Lefty's grew over the course of the school year, becoming the biggest liberal blog in the Notre Dame community. The blog really took off in the spring semester during the controversy over President Obama's commencement address at Notre Dame. We now have 20+ writers on the blog, 3 editors, a graphic designer, 223 posts and over 16,000 page views. We have writers from Notre Dame, St. Mary's, Purdue, and Ball State. And we're still growing!

We've lost some readership over the summer, but we fully expect to see more growth in this new school year. ShamRockNRoll, our most active writer, kept us afloat with all his posts over the summer, and unfortunately, like Henry, his obligations with an internship will be preventing him from continuing to be an active writer this semester. Luckily, Henry has returned from his summer in Nicaragua and will start writing again. I graduated last year, and I work full time now, but I'll try to post regularly this year as well. Right now is a great opportunity for the rest of our writing staff to step up to the plate and really define themselves as bloggers. It's also a better time than ever to join up with us and let your own voice be heard! We're still looking for more writers and staff, and more ways to grow and excel. This is going to be an exciting year, and I'm glad to be a part of it here at Lefty's Last Cry.

Peace

Bill

Suggestions for the New Year

Lefty's Last Cry is kicking off the new school year. What would you like to see more of?

Sunday Funday Once Again

Every Sunday we try to post fun things (usually videos) that we find online to share with our readers. This is known as Sunday Funday, a Lefty's tradition. Sunday Funday posts can be relevant to politics, but they don't have to be. We often try to incorporate some music into Sunday Funday as well, which is a great way to expose other people to songs that you like and to find new music that your fellow Lefties listen to.

I don't usually make these, but since I'm not aware of anyone else volunteering to do it, I figured I'd go ahead and give it a try. It would be a shame for the first Sunday of the school year to not be a Funday as well.

This is a clip from an Eddie Murphy/Dan Aykroyd film called Trading Places, about a New York stockbroker who trades lives with a street hustler. It's a funny movie, and in this clip you'll see a cameo from now-Senator Al Franken! I know political discourse has soured lately, but I take comfort knowing that Al Franken is probably the only U.S. Senator who has had someone tell them, "I'll rip out your eyes and piss on your brain".
